How long after LASIK can you exercise?

If you're an active person, you might be asking: "When can I get back to working out after LASIK?"

It's a smart question. While LASIK has a quick recovery, your eyes still need time to heal. Returning to exercise too soon or ignoring aftercare instructions—could increase your risk of irritation or infection.

Here's a guide to getting back to your fitness routine after LASIK.

The first 24 hours

The day of surgery, rest is the best exercise. Your eyes will feel scratchy or watery, and your vision may be blurry. Avoid any strenuous activity. Sleep or relax with your eyes closed as much as possible.

Days 1–3: Light activity

After your first follow-up appointment (usually the next day), you can resume light exercise:

  • Walking
  • Stationary biking
  • Gentle stretching or yoga

Just avoid breaking a sweat that might drip into your eyes. Wear protective sunglasses outdoors.

Days 3–7: Moderate exercise

By the end of the first week, many patients feel comfortable doing more moderate workouts like:

  • Jogging
  • Treadmill workouts
  • Low-impact strength training

Be cautious with sweat and avoid rubbing your eyes. Keep a clean towel handy.

1–2 Weeks: Back to the gym

Most patients can return to the gym within 7–10 days. That includes weightlifting, elliptical training, and most cardio.

But skip these for now:

  • Swimming pools, hot tubs, or lakes (wait at least 2 weeks)
  • High-contact sports like basketball or martial arts (wait 4+ weeks)

2–4 Weeks: Swimming and higher impact activities

Swimming is safe again after about 2 weeks, once your eyes are more healed and infection risk is lower. Goggles are recommended for extra protection.

By 3–4 weeks, you can resume:

  • Outdoor running
  • Group fitness classes
  • Non-contact sports

4+ Weeks: Contact sports and intense training

After one month, most activities—including contact sports—are safe. Sports like soccer, basketball, or boxing may require protective eyewear for added safety during the first few months.

Why the wait?

After LASIK, your cornea needs time to heal. Sweat, dust, water, or accidental eye contact can introduce bacteria and increase the risk of infection. Giving your eyes a few weeks ensures long-term safety and results.

Tips for exercising after LASIK

  • Wear sunglasses outdoors to protect from UV light
  • Don't rub your eyes, even if they feel dry
  • Stay hydrated—it helps reduce dryness
  • Follow your surgeon's timeline—every patient heals differently
