LASIK suitability criteria

LASIK for Nearsightedness
When a person is nearsighted, the eye is anatomically too long for the shape of that person’s cornea; therefore, the rays of light fall short of the person’s retina. This results in blurry vision for the patient.

To correct this blurry vision, a patient can wear corrective lenses or potentially have LASIK. With LASIK, the corneal surface is flattened with a cool laser beam to alter the path of the light rays. This results in rays of light landing in focus onto the retina, providing a clear picture of the world to the patient.

LASIK for Farsightedness
When a person is farsighted the opposite is true for the cornea and the rays of light. The eye is anatomically too short for the shape of that person’s cornea; therefore, the rays of light fall behind the person’s retina. To correct this blurry vision, a patient can wear corrective lenses or potentially have LASIK.

With LASIK, the corneal surface is steepened with a cool laser beam to alter the path of the light rays. This results in rays of light landing in focus onto the retina, giving a clear picture of the world to the patient.

LASIK for Astigmatism
When a person has astigmatism, the cornea is shaped more like a football than a basketball, causing distortion to both distance and near vision.

With LASIK, the corneal surface is reshaped to be spherical so the light rays bend correctly to focus the light, resulting in a clearer picture of the world.

LASIK works by reshaping the front surface of the eye (called the cornea) so the light rays that enter the eye bend in the correct way to give good vision. When a person wears their glasses or contacts, the light rays are altered in front of the eye. When the cornea is reshaped, the light rays are altered on the surface of the eye. This means with LASIK, the patient enjoys 24/7 vision correction—as compared to glasses or contacts that only provide the correcting effect when the patient is wearing lenses.

The team at Elite LASIK & Cataract has always believed that using leading-edge technology is critical to patient safety, satisfaction and overall visual outcomes. One of the most groundbreaking shifts in LASIK technology has been the evolution of bladeless LASIK. In bladeless LASIK, a femtosecond laser rather than a handheld instrument is used to perform the first step of the procedure: the creation of the corneal flap.When it comes to the second part of the procedure — the reshaping of the cornea — we use the EX500 excimer laser, which is an excellent match for delicate procedures like LASIK. The excimer laser creates clean, precise cuts and removes microscopic amounts of corneal tissue while leaving the remainder of the tissue intact. To put it in perspective, the EX500 is so precise that it can divide a grain of sand into 1,000 pieces. By precisely reshaping and smoothing the cornea, the excimer laser helps us to improve the way light enters the eye and is focused on the retina.

The EX500 has other special features, such as a tracking mechanism that can track your eye 5,000 times per second; if your eye moves even the smallest bit during the treatment, the laser will shut down until your eye returns to the proper position.

We’re asked every day by patients, especially ones who may be a little nervous, is LASIK eye surgery safe? The answer, of course, is yes, but it’s natural to have some anxiety when making a big decision involving surgery of any kind.

LASIK is one of the industry’s safest procedures
Though LASIK was approved by the FDA in 1998, advances in the field over that time span have taken an already-safe procedure and made it even safer for patients. The type of modern laser technology that we use at Elite LASIK & Cataract has been shown to significantly reduce unwanted side effects from LASIK. They’re even designed to shut off if they detect eye movement that could cause an error. Your eye surgeon will be able to explain to you how the procedure will work so you can feel comfortable and know what to expect.

At Elite LASIK & Cataract, our staff has a great deal of experience to lean on, including well over 25,000 surgical procedures between them combined — a figure that’s only going to grow as time goes on. You can feel confident in our expertise when you come in for LASIK.

LASIK is safer than wearing contact lenses
Reducing reliance on corrective eyewear is one of the top reasons people choose to look into LASIK in the first place. And while millions of people safely rely on contact lenses for their vision correction, LASIK is ultimately the safer option.

Essentially, while no surgery is without risks, the risk of any infection or injury with LASIK is extremely, extremely low. But when you put in and remove contact lenses every single day, the risk of long-term eye conditions or infections is significantly higher — around 1 in 2000 contact lens wearers may develop an eye infection serious enough to cause permanent vision loss, while that number for LASIK patients is around 1 in 10,000.

Not only is LASIK safe, It’s painless
People can be very cautious when it comes to procedures around their eyes, and that’s completely understandable. However, LASIK is a quick and safe outpatient procedure. You’ll receive a local anesthetic to prevent any sensations during the surgery. Perhaps the best news is that average LASIK surgery lasts around 10 minutes per eye.

You’ll be able to go home the same day, and many people report having improved, clear vision within 24-48 hours of their procedure. Your doctor may have further recovery instructions, such as wearing an eye shield overnight or using eye drops.

As with any surgical procedure, LASIK carries certain risks. Serious but rare complications include:

  • Potential vision reduction that even corrective lenses cannot address.
  • Irregular changes to the cornea’s shape, compromising visual quality.
  • Risk of corneal infection, which could impact clarity.

More common, minor side effects may include:

  • Intermittent fuzziness / blurry edges on objects
  • Fluctuating vision / less than “perfect” vision
  • Decreased night vision quality (e.g. “glare”, “halos” or “starbursts”)
  • Dry eyes
  • Redness
  • Tender or swollen eyelids
  • Foreign body sensation
  • Light sensitivity
  • Difficulty focusing on near objects
  • Headaches
  • Eye strain

Beyond LASIK, there are several advanced vision correction options available, such as PRK, SMILE, and lens replacement. Each approach offers unique advantages depending on individual needs, lifestyle, and eye health, and can be discussed in a personalized consultation.

  1. Arrive on time: Plan to arrive at your scheduled check-in time.
  2. Confirm payment: Complete the financial arrangements for your procedure.
  3. Overview session: Meet with our doctors and staff to review your procedure and the plans for your post-operative care.
  4. Meet the surgeon: Meet with your surgeon to go over the detailed plan for your procedure.
  5. Prepare for the procedure: Receive relaxation medication to reduce your anxiety and Aleve to decrease discomfort after your procedure. Please let our doctors and staff know if you would prefer not to take the relaxation medication.
  6. The procedure: The procedure takes up to 10 minutes per eye. Only eye drops are used as an anesthetic. Our team will make sure you are comfortable and will talk you through the entire process.
  7. After the procedure: After a final check by one of our doctors, you will be on your way home to rest with your eyes closed for the first several hours. We will provide you with Aleve PM to take to help you relax or sleep if necessary.

Total office time is approximately 1.5-2 hours.

After a brief post-op exam, you’ll be released to go home, where you should nap or sleep to keep your eyes closed, hydrated, and protected. You may experience some side effects during the first 24 hours, including mild discomfort, itchiness, puffiness, and blurry vision, but this is normal and will pass soon. Most of your recovery happens over a few days, but complete recovery and achieving your best possible vision will take several weeks.

  • Use the eye shield and eyedrops we provide
  • Don’t use makeup or certain facial treatments
  • Use eye protection like goggles during tasks that may expose your eyes to dust or liquid, such as cleaning and showering
  • Avoid strenuous activity like contact sports or swimming

After a LASIK procedure, most patients can notice an immediate improvement in vision, although, for the first three to six hours it appears as if you are looking through wax paper. Recovery times for other refractive procedures may vary and we can provide more specific information during your evaluation.

After your procedure, the surgeon will check and make sure everything is in perfect position by looking at your eye under a magnifying microscope called a slit lamp. Then, we will release you to go home. Your vision will be blurry and your eyes might be puffy, watery or sensitive to light. You must arrange transportation ahead of time, as you will not be able to drive yourself.

Once you arrive home, you should nap or rest for three to four hours or for the remainder of the night if your procedure is done in the evening. Our team will give you protective eye shields to wear to protect your eyes as you sleep. You should plan to wear them while sleeping for the first week after your surgery.

Some patients experience mild burning or itching as the numbing eyedrops wear off. We will provide you with special eyedrops to help lubricate your eyes, but you must be careful to avoid rubbing them as your corneal flap heals. You may also experience temporary visual problems like mild glare, halos around lights and sensitivity to light.

You can expect to have a follow-up appointment with our team the day after your surgery, so we can check your recovery progress and ensure your eyes are healing properly. The majority of our patients are able to see well enough the day after surgery to drive themselves to their appointment.

Any aftereffects should subside within a few days and your visual results should become more apparent as the weeks go by. You will check in with our team over a period of one year to ensure your eyes are recovering properly.

Who is a good candidate for LASIK?

Anyone who has healthy eyes and is using regular vision correction is typically a good candidate for LASIK. The evaluation process is incredibly important in determining a patient’s candidacy for the procedure, as our office is equipped with specialized diagnostic equipment not commonly found at a regular eye doctor’s office. This equipment gives us the ability to thoroughly examine the cornea and determine whether or not a LASIK procedure is in the best interest of the patient.

Is LASIK painful?

In most cases, patients describe the procedure as having minimal discomfort; however, each patient experience is unique.

How long does LASIK last?

The goal of the LASIK procedure is for the vision to last until the patient needs a cataract surgery, which usually takes place in a patient’s 60’s or 70’s. The distance vision should maintain until that time. The reading vision will maintain until the patient reaches their 40’s, when the eye starts to lose its ability to see up close. At this time, the patient can either use over-the-counter reading glasses or return to us for an additional procedure which is called lens replacement surgery.

How can I prepare for LASIK?

  1. Decrease caffeine intake
    On the day of your procedure, please consume only a minimal amount of caffeine prior to your procedure. It is best that you are able to sleep after your procedure to help in the healing process.
  2. Minimize your morning routine
    Do not wear any makeup, hair products, perfume, aftershave or lotion on the day of your procedure.
  3. Follow your normal meal schedule
    Do not change your eating habits prior to the procedure. Please discuss any medications you are currently taking with your doctor prior to the day of your procedure.
  4. Bring a friend
    You’ll need to arrange for someone to bring you in for the procedure and pick you up once the procedure is completed. Your guest is more than welcome to accompany you through your procedure. If they wish, they may watch your procedure live from our “friends and family viewing area.” If your guest chooses not to view the procedure, they may wait in our comfortable lounge or simply return to the center one hour after your arrival time.
  5. Review the informed consent document
    Take the time to read the Informed Consent document prior to the day of your procedure. Please do not sign the document until you are with your surgeon on the day of your procedure. Additionally, if you happen to develop a cold sore the week of your surgery, please call us to let us know. For your safety, it may be best to reschedule your procedure if you have a cold sore.

Can I still have the procedure done if I cannot touch my eye or wear contacts?

You are not alone! Many of our patients have difficulty touching their eyes or wearing contact. That’s why this is such a great solution for you! If you are unable to touch your eyes, that is a good thing! After the procedure, we require that you do not touch your eyes for at least five days. There are several medication drops that you will administer during your brief recovery however our doctors have several great tips for instilling those drops without the necessity of touching your eyes. During the procedure, there are several numbing eye drops that are used to greatly reduce the sensation of having your eyes touched; therefore the sensations you would normally expect are lessened significantly.

Does it correct my astigmatism?

Yes! Astigmatism is when the eye is shaped more like a football than a basketball. The advanced technology that we use to correct your vision is able to reshape the corneal surface so the astigmatism is corrected.

Am I awake during the procedure?

Yes, it is necessary for you to be able to follow instructions from the surgeon during the procedure, so we would like for you to be awake. However, we do administer an oral agent to help you relax and feel comfortable. In addition, there will be a topical anesthetic used to numb the eyes resulting in minimal discomfort during the procedure.

How long does it take?

Although you’ll be at Elite LASIK & Cataract for approximately two hours the day of the procedure, the procedure itself typically only takes a total of 10 minutes.

What if I move, will it mess up my results?

No! Thankfully due to our superior technology, there is a tracker on the laser that tracks your eye 4,000 times per second. If a patient inadvertently moves during the procedure, the laser will automatically stop treatment and once the surgeon has the patient in proper position, treatment will resume.

What are my restrictions?

DO NOT RUB OR TOUCH YOUR EYES FOR ONE WEEK AFTER YOUR PROCEDURE.

Patients can experience eyelid swelling, tenderness, and slight redness in the eyes for several days. No hard rubbing of the eyes should be done for four weeks following the surgery.

Do NOT wear make-up around the eyes for one week after surgery.

Do not swim or hot tub for at least two weeks after your procedure. However, other physical activities (biking, working out, etc.) may be resumed on the second day after your procedure. Do not expose yourself to high-risk activities that can result in a direct blow to the eyes (e.g. an elbow in basketball) for at least the first month. If you participate in high-risk activities, always wear protective eyewear.

No heavy weightlifting over 45 lbs for 3-5 days after the procedure.

So long as you are medically cleared for surgery and your vision has degraded beyond 20/20, we will correct that degradation with the latest technology we have in our practice — regardless of how long ago your surgery was. It’s as simple as that.

In fact, we’re the only practice in the Indianapolis area who makes that promise, because we care that much about you having perfect vision for life.

And unlike plans from many other LASIK providers, we do not require you to have annual eye exams with us to keep this plan active (although it’s highly recommended).
