What to expect the day of your LASIK surgery

You’ve had your LASIK consultation. You’re ready to say goodbye to glasses and contacts. The big day is here.

Still feeling a bit nervous? That’s normal. The more you know, the more confident you’ll feel. So here’s exactly what you can expect on the day of your LASIK surgery at Elite LASIK & Cataract.

1. No makeup, lotions, or fragrances

Before you arrive, make sure to avoid:

  • Eye makeup or face creams
  • Perfumes or scented lotions
  • Wearing contact lenses (you’ll already have stopped these before the consultation)

Clean skin and clear eyes make for a smooth and safe procedure.

2. Eat normally and wear comfy clothes

You don’t need to fast or do anything special with your diet. Eat a light meal beforehand and wear comfortable, casual clothing.

Skip anything with lint or fuzz (like wool sweaters) to keep the procedure room clean.

3. You’ll be in the clinic for about 90 minutes

The procedure itself takes only a few minutes per eye, but plan on being with us for about 1.5 hours.

Here’s the general flow:

  • We’ll review your consent and answer any last questions.
  • Numbing drops will be applied-no needles!
  • You’ll lie back in a comfortable position.
  • Your eyelids will be gently held open (you won’t feel the need to blink).
  • The laser treatment is quick, silent, and painless.
  • You’ll rest in the recovery area for a short time before heading home.

4. Someone needs to drive you home

LASIK is painless, but your vision may be a bit blurry or hazy at first. You’ll also be given a mild sedative to help you relax, so you won’t be able to drive yourself home.

Make sure a family member or friend is available to take you.

5. Expect light sensitivity and tearing

It’s normal to feel:

  • Gritty or scratchy eyes
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Mild tearing
  • Blurred vision that gets better overnight

We’ll give you sunglasses, lubricating drops, and full instructions on how to care for your eyes.

6. Rest is the best recovery

After you get home, plan to nap or rest your eyes for a few hours. Avoid screens and bright lights. Keep your eyes closed as much as possible. Most patients feel much better after just one nap.

7. You’ll see clearly by tomorrow

Most patients wake up the next morning with noticeably clearer vision. For many, it's a life-changing moment.

Your vision will continue to improve over the next few days and weeks as your eyes heal.

8. We’ll see you the next day

Your follow-up appointment is usually scheduled for the day after surgery. We’ll check your healing and answer any questions.

We’re with you every step of the way, before, during, and after your LASIK journey.
