Get all the details on lens replacement surgery and see how it can restore clear, youthful vision, helping you overcome age-related sight challenges

Lens replacement is typically for patients with presbyopia or extreme farsightedness that might not be ideal candidates for LASIK or PRK. It may be the most viable option for patients with both presbyopia and moderate to severe hyperopia.

Lens replacement surgery is not for severe farsighted patients – it is for mild to moderate farsighted and nearsighted patients with presbyopia. It can be an alternative for LASIK.

Lens replacement, or refractive lens exchange, can sometimes be the best option for a patient who is not a candidate for one of our other refractive procedures. Lens replacement replaces the eye’s clear natural lens with an artificial intraocular lens to correct vision and achieve sharper focus while reducing the need for reading glasses or bifocals.

Although LASIK and PRK are the more popular procedures, refractive lens exchange is a good alternative for many people struggling with refractive errors and dependence on visual aids.

In fact, lens replacement surgery may be the better option in many cases because it can correct nearly any degree of farsightedness (instead of only mildly to moderately severe cases) and presbyopia, which LASIK and PRK do not address.

Another advantage of lens replacement is that it eliminates the need for cataract surgery later in life as the artificial lens cannot develop cataracts.

Lens replacement surgery is generally safe, but like any surgery, it carries some risks.

  • Possible complications include infection, inflammation, or clouding of the lens capsule, which may require further treatment.
  • In rare cases, there could be issues like retinal detachment or increased eye pressure.
  • Some patients experience glare or halos around lights post-surgery.

Though these risks are rare, it’s essential to discuss them with your surgeon to understand both benefits and potential complications fully.

Monofocal IOLs provide exceptional clarity at a single, designated distance, allowing patients to enjoy precise vision while using glasses for other ranges.

Multifocal and accommodating IOLs elevate this experience by offering seamless vision across multiple distances, minimizing or even eliminating the need for glasses.

For those with astigmatism, toric lenses deliver a premium solution, precisely correcting irregular corneal shape for enhanced clarity and refined visual quality.

Each lens option is designed to provide a tailored, high-end vision experience based on individual needs, offering patients a luxurious level of freedom and clarity in their daily lives.

  1. Arrive on time: Plan to arrive at the surgery center two hours before your scheduled time. An Elite LASIK & Cataract Representative will be there to assist you. Do not wear watches or jewelry on your procedure day.
  2. Meet the surgeon: Meet with Dr. Ponugoti to review your procedure and the plans for your post-operative care as well as sign consent forms.
  3. Prepare for the procedure: Receive relaxation medication to reduce your anxiety. Please let our doctors and staff know if you would prefer not to take the relaxation medication.
  4. The procedure: The procedure takes about 30 minutes per eye. You will receive a mild IV sedation. Our team will make sure you are comfortable and will talk you through the entire process.
  5. After the procedure: After the procedure, you will be in a recovery room for about 30 minutes. Most patients will be discharged 30 minutes after their procedure. You MUST have someone drive you home after the procedure.

Total office time is approximately 2.5-3 hours.

RLE is fairly similar to LASIK in both how soon you can expect to see results, and the length of physical recovery. Most patients will see a drastic improvement within 24 hours, which continues to improve over a couple of weeks. Initial side effects may differ slightly from LASIK, due to the different nature of the procedure, but they’re generally just as brief and manageable.

  • Wear whatever eye protection, and use the eye drops, we provide to you
  • Get plenty of rest to allow your eyes to heal
  • Don’t participate in strenuous physical activities until your doctor says it’s okay
  • Avoid dusty or dirty environments, or irritants such as makeup or some face washes

How do I know if I’m a candidate for lens replacement surgery?

The best way to determine whether you are a candidate is to meet with a qualified eye surgeon for a one-on-one consultation. In general, you might be a good candidate if you:

  • Have been diagnosed with nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism or presbyopia
  • Do not qualify for LASIK because of the degree of your refractive error
  • Want to reduce or eliminate your dependence on glasses or contacts after surgery.

What type of artificial lenses (IOLs) are used?

Monofocal IOLs restore vision at a single distance, requiring patients to wear glasses to see at other distances. Multifocal or accommodating IOLs restore vision at multiple distances to reduce or eliminate the need to wear glasses. And toric lenses are designed to help correct astigmatism caused by an irregularly shaped cornea.

Will I feel the IOL in my eye?

No, you will not be able to see or feel the IOL inside your eye.

How long will the IOL last?

IOLs are designed to last permanently.

Will I need eyeglasses or contact lenses after lens replacement surgery?

It depends on the type of IOL that you and your surgeon select. If you have a multifocal or accommodating IOL, it is not likely that you will need visual aids.

Is lens replacement surgery covered by insurance?

Typically the procedure is not covered by insurance since it is considered elective.

How does lens replacement surgery work?

Lens replacement works by replacing the lens located in the eye, very similar to a cataract procedure. The surgeon is able to replace the original lens with a multifocal if the patient is interested in achieving both distance and near vision.
