Keep Your Eyes Healthy!

You use your eyes for virtually everything you do, so keeping them healthy is a must. You only get one pair of eyes, so it’s important to take care of them!  Below is a list of ways to keep your eyes healthy.

Get Regular Eye Exams

Even if you think your vision is fine, it’s important to have regular eye exams, preferably dilated exams. Dilated exams help the doctor see your eye better and detect eye diseases or other eye problems.

Eat Healthy Food and Maintain Healthy Weight

You’ve probably heard that carrots are good for your eyes, but other fruits and vegetables can help keep your eyes healthy, too. Leafy greens like kale and spinach are particularly good for your eyes, as well as fish that is high in omega-3 fatty acids, like salmon or tuna. Along with eating healthy, it’s important to maintain a healthy weight to reduce your risk of developing diabetes and other systemic diseases that can affect the eyes.

Wear Protective Eyewear and Sunglasses

Make sure you’re wearing protective eyewear if you’re playing sports or working around hazardous material. It’s important to wear safety goggles to protect your eyes from chemicals, dirt and debris. And don’t forget to wear your sunglasses when you’re outside, too! Sunglasses can protect your eyes from the sun, because, believe it or not, your eyes can get sunburned, too!

Quit Smoking

Smoking has been linked to multiple health problems throughout the body, but it can affect your eyes as well. Smoking can increase your risk of cataracts, macular degeneration and even optic nerve damage.

Take a Break from Screens

Your eyes work hard when you’re on the computer or looking at your phone. When you’re looking at a screen, you blink nearly 5 times less than you normally would, which can cause your eyes to dry out and get tired. Take a break from the screen about every 20 minutes to reduce eyestrain.

Keeping your eyes healthy is important to your overall health. And if you’re looking into LASIK, it’s imperative to have healthy eyes to qualify for the procedure. To find out how healthy your eyes are and to see if you qualify for LASIK, contact us to schedule your free evaluation.
