Comparing LASIK vs. PRK vs. SMILE

When it comes to laser vision correction, you’ve got more than one option. LASIK, PRK, and SMILE are all effective procedures—but they’re not one-size-fits-all.

At Elite LASIK & Cataract, we offer all three. Here’s how they compare—and how we help you choose the right one for your eyes.

What they all have in common

All three procedures:

  • Use a laser to reshape your cornea
  • Can correct short-sight, long-sight, and astigmatism
  • Are done in just a few minutes
  • Are safe, effective, and long-lasting.

The difference? How the laser reaches the cornea—and what that means for healing, comfort, and suitability.

LASIK

How it works:
A thin flap is made in the cornea. The laser reshapes the underlying layer. The flap is replaced and heals naturally.

Pros:

  • Fast recovery (most people see well the next day)
  • Minimal discomfort
  • Proven, widely used

Best for:
People with healthy, thick corneas and stable prescriptions.

PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy)

How it works:
No flap is made. Instead, the top layer of the cornea is gently removed. The laser reshapes the cornea underneath.

Pros:

  • Good for thin corneas or dry eyes
  • Less risk of flap complications
  • Great long-term results.

Cons:

  • Longer recovery (a few days to a week)
  • More discomfort in the early days.

Best for:
People with thin corneas, active lifestyles, or higher risk of trauma to the eyes (e.g., athletes).

SMILE (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction)

How it works:
A laser creates a small disc of tissue inside the cornea, which is then removed through a tiny incision—no flap needed.

Pros:

  • Minimally invasive
  • Less dry eye
  • Fast healing.

Cons:

  • Only available for short-sightedness and some astigmatism
  • Not ideal for long-sight or reading vision.

Best for:
People with mild to moderate myopia and those concerned about dry eyes or flap complications.

Which one is best?

There’s no one “best” procedure. It depends on:

  • Your prescription
  • Your corneal thickness
  • Your lifestyle
  • Your eye health
  • Your recovery goals.

We do advanced scans and tests to guide you toward the safest, most effective option.
