How long do LASIK results last compared to PRK?
When you’re thinking about laser vision correction, one of the biggest questions is how long your results will last. After all, you want to be sure this is a good long-term investment in your vision.
Two of the most common procedures are LASIK and PRK. Both reshape the cornea to improve how light focuses in your eye, giving you clear vision without glasses or contacts. But do the results last the same amount of time?
The short answer: yes, LASIK and PRK provide equally long-lasting results for most people. Let’s look closer at how they compare.
How LASIK works
LASIK uses a laser to create a thin flap in the cornea. The surgeon then reshapes the cornea underneath and replaces the flap. This allows light to focus correctly on the retina, giving you clear vision.
The results are permanent because the cornea keeps its new shape.
How PRK works
PRK is similar but doesn’t involve creating a flap. Instead, the very top layer of the cornea (the epithelium) is gently removed, and the laser reshapes the surface underneath. The epithelium then grows back as you heal.
Like LASIK, PRK results are permanent because the shape of the cornea has been changed.
How long do results last?
Studies show that both LASIK and PRK offer stable, long-term results for the vast majority of patients. In fact, more than 95% of people still have 20/25 vision or better 10 years after surgery with either procedure.
Why vision might change over time
It’s important to know that even though LASIK and PRK are permanent, your eyes can still change as you age. This is not because the procedure has “worn off.” Instead, it’s due to natural changes like:
- Presbyopia: The lens inside your eye loses flexibility with age, causing near vision to blur (usually after 40)
- Cataracts: The lens becomes cloudy later in life, affecting vision no matter what procedure you had
- Prescription changes: Rarely, your eyes may continue to change slightly over the years.
LASIK vs. PRK: Which is more stable?
In terms of long-term stability, there’s no significant difference between LASIK and PRK. Both offer durable, lasting results.
The choice between them usually depends on:
- Corneal thickness
- Lifestyle needs (athletes and military may prefer PRK)
- Eye health history.
When enhancements are needed
Some patients may need a follow-up procedure years later to fine-tune their vision. Enhancements are quick and easy for both LASIK and PRK patients.
The bottom line
If you’re deciding between LASIK and PRK, rest assured that both procedures deliver long-lasting vision correction. The key is choosing the one that’s safest and most effective for your unique eyes.
