Why do some people need LASIK enhancements?

LASIK is known for giving excellent results. In fact, most people get 20/20 vision or better after surgery. But occasionally, a patient may need a second laser treatment to fine-tune their results. This is called a LASIK enhancement.

At Elite LASIK & Cataract, we believe in full transparency. So, let’s break down what LASIK enhancements are, why they’re sometimes needed, and what you can expect.

What is a LASIK enhancement?

A LASIK enhancement is a second laser procedure done after the original LASIK surgery. It adjusts the cornea just a little more to sharpen your vision further.

This is not a sign that the first procedure "failed." Instead, it’s a way to fine-tune the outcome if your vision settles differently than expected.

Why might someone need an enhancement?

There are a few reasons:

  1. Minor prescription left
Sometimes, a small amount of nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism remains. An enhancement can correct this.
  2. Healing variations
Everyone heals differently. Your cornea may respond slightly differently than predicted.
  3. Age-related vision changes
Vision can change over time, especially with age. If that happens years after your initial LASIK, an enhancement may help.

How common are enhancements?

Not very. Studies show that only about 1 to 2 in 20 patients ever need a touch-up. And at Elite LASIK & Cataract, we use advanced technology and personalized treatment planning to keep that rate low.

Still, it’s good to know that the option is available if needed.

How soon could you need one?

Most enhancements, if needed, happen within the first year. That’s why your post-op appointments are important. They help us catch any issues early and act quickly if necessary.

Some patients might not need an enhancement for 10 to 15 years, especially if age-related changes like presbyopia develop later on.

What is the enhancement procedure like?

It’s very similar to the original LASIK:

  • Quick and painless
  • Numbing drops are used
  • It takes just a few minutes.

Most people return to normal activities within a day, just like after the first treatment.

Is it safe?

Yes. LASIK enhancements are safe and effective. However, they require careful screening to make sure your cornea is healthy and thick enough for a second procedure.

That’s why we always perform detailed scans and check-ups before recommending any enhancement.

How do I know if I'll need one?

Most people don’t. But during your consultation, we’ll:

  • Evaluate your prescription stability
  • Assess your eye health and corneal thickness
  • Use advanced mapping tools to plan your surgery.

This lowers the chance of needing an enhancement later.
